Alexander Kapp

Baritone

Biography

A native of Louisville, Kentucky,  Alexander Kapp is quickly establishing himself as a young baritone of note, proving he is a versatile voice in both operatic and concert repertoire. He was most recently seen singing the role of Jim Crowley in IU Opera Theater's production of An American Dream, as well as performing as the Bass Soloist for DvoÅ™ák's Te Deum with the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra and the Western Colorado ChoraleIn the 2023-24 season, Alexander returned as a Bonfils-Stanton Apprentice Artist with Central City Opera, where he was heard as Mercutio in their Young Artist Matinee performance of Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, as well as Pops and the Padua Priest in their productions of Cole Porter's Kiss Me Kate. Alexander also joined Virginia Opera as a Herndon Foundation Emerging Artist, where he performed the roles of  Fiorello and The Officer in their running production of The Barber of Seville. 

In the 2022-23 season, Alexander joined the Central City Opera as a Bonfils-Stanton Studio Artist, where he covered the role of Manfred Lewin in the regional premiere of Jake Heggie’s Two Remain in addition to performing in their Studio Artist Showcase Concerts. He was slated to perform as a recital soloist in their annual Lunch and a Song Recital Series, however, this was cancelled due to the Covid-19 epidemic. Other recent highlights included performing the roles of  Dr. Pangloss and Martin in Candide and Ottone in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, both with the IU Opera Theater. Alexander has also previously been a Vocal Institute Fellow with the Music Academy of the West under the direction of Marilyn Horne. While there, he performed in their Shakespeare Scenes Concerts as well as in the role of Thomas in their production of Jennifer Higdon’s award-winning opera, Cold Mountain. Additionally, he has been seen in the roles of Ford (Falstaff) and Dottore Malatesta (Don Pasquale), with UC-CCM and the UC-CCM Summer Opera Program respectively, as well as in the roles of Top (The Tender Land), Le Podestat (Le Docteur Miracle), and Bartley (Riders to the Sea) with UofL Opera Theater, among others.

Equally as comfortable on the competition stage, Alexander has been a semi-finalist, finalist, and won awards in several top competitions.  Most recently, he was a semi-finalist in the Annapolis Opera Vocal Competition (2024), a finalist in both the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition (2023) and the Opera Grand Rapids Vocal Competition (2020), and a semi-finalist in the Opera Index Vocal Competition (2022). He was named an Encouragement Award Winner from the Tennessee District of The Metropolitan Opera's Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition (2020).

Alexander holds a M.M. degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) , and his B.M. degrees in Vocal Performance and Music Education from the University of Louisville.
